The National Institute of Statistics (INE) estimates that the unemployment rate fell to 6.3% in April, down 0.3 percentage points from the same period last year and 0.1 less than the previous month.
Thus, in April, the unemployment rate reached its lowest level since August 2023 (also 6.3%).
According to INE, the active population (5342.1 thousand people) in April increased compared to the same period last year (1.2%) and decreased compared to the previous month (0.5%).
Regarding the preliminary estimate for April of the employed population (5004.7 thousand), INE states that it registered an increase of 1.5% compared to the same month in 2023 and a decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous month.
The unemployed population in April, estimated at 337.4 thousand people, decreased by 2.8% compared to the same period last year and by 2.1% compared to March.
On the other hand, the estimate of the inactive population in April was 2460.9 thousand people, INE states that this figure increased by 2.2% compared to the same period last year and by 1.2% compared to the previous month.
The labor underutilization rate in April was 11.1%, lower than the same month in 2023 (minus 0.9 points) and the previous month (minus 0.1 points).
The INE also published this Wednesday its final estimates for March 2024, which put the unemployment rate at 6.4%, 0.4 points less than in the same period last year and 0.2 points less than in February , and lower than the preliminary estimate of 6.5% announced by the institute on May 2.
