“I have decided to suspend my mandate as a deputy of the Assembly of the Republic, and I will do so in the next few days and I will take office as a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira,” Paulo Cafofo told Lusa. agency.
The leader of the Madeira Socialists said the decision was a commitment to Madeira and would “even lead the PS/Madeira parliamentary group.”
“I have always said that Madeira is my business, this is my life’s work, and I will be where it will bring the greatest benefit to my region. And I believe that this is useful, and my contribution is important in the Regional Assembly in this very difficult political moment,” he emphasized.
According to Cafofo, this means “taking a position of strength, commitment and being at the forefront of political struggle at a time (…) very unstable, with a lot of instability in the region.”
“My experience and my desire to change the region demand that I be here,” he said.
The island’s PS leader, who tops the list of regional elections expected on Sunday, assured that he will “continue to uncompromisingly defend the interests of the people of Madeira and Porto Santos” as he is “fully committed to turning the page” and “bringing back hope.” , stability and the future of Madeira.”
In last Sunday’s elections, the SDP received the most votes, electing 19 deputies out of 47, but without an absolute majority (24 parliamentarians).
The PS was the second political force to win the votes of the Madeira electorate, but it managed to retain only the 11 seats it already held in the regional parliament.
JPP increased its membership from five to nine members, Chega retained the same four parliamentarians, and IL and PAN re-elected their only MPs.
Faced with this scenario, a day after the election the PS and JPP, which together have 20 MPs, announced an agreement to create an alternative government seeking to topple the PSD.
However, the representative of the Republic, having heard on Tuesday the seven elected political forces, decided today to nominate the Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque to re-form the government.
The PS failed to achieve its goal, but Paulo Cafofo confirmed that Lusa is “a man of conviction” and noted that she is “constantly fighting to open a new page in the region”, emphasizing that, in his opinion, “it is possible” .
“This is what prompted me to run for the post of party president, prompted me to run in these regional elections and for the post of government president in the fight for several chapters,” he emphasized.
He added that he believes in taking his seat in the regional parliament, adding: “And, moreover, I am taking on the leadership of the parliamentary group, which is a sign of my strong commitment to my responsibility and my beliefs.”
