In June, the government will sign construction contracts worth more than 2 billion euros

The government will sign contracts in June for works worth more than 2 billion euros (ME) as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the Minister of Cohesion Manuel Castro Almeida announced this Wednesday.

“These are contracts that we will sign with local authorities for the retraining and construction of schools, housing and health centers, civil engineering works, which should be completed in June 2026,” the Deputy Minister of Cohesion told Lusa Territorial.

Manuel Castro Almeida was this Wednesday in the municipality of Monchique, Faro district, to sign the first contracts for the requalification of a total of four secondary schools in Albufeira, Monchique, Faro and Vila Real de Santo António, worth 29.1. TO ME.

According to a government official, contracts will be signed in the next 15 days for the construction of a school park in Alentejo and the north of the country, which will require an investment of 450 million PRR mega-millions.

“I hope that our country has the opportunity to complete all the work by mid-2026, which is the deadline for completing the work” under the PDP, he said.

According to the minister, the government is “working around the clock, in a great hurry to sign contracts that will allow the chairmen of municipal councils to announce tenders so that work can begin this year.”

“I ask local authorities to exercise maximum caution when putting works out for tender. This requires effort from everyone,” he said.

Castro Almeida said the government was “putting pressure” on the presidents of the regional Commissions for Coordination and Development (CCDR) to speed up processing of applications, arguing that “a day’s delay could be important” to ensure the work was completed.

“If the work is not ready in June 2026, funding will fall and there will be no illusions, because Europe is guaranteed not to extend the deadline,” he warned.

The minister added that “the excitement is such” that the government is “doing something unusual” in the case of housing and health centers.

According to the minister, the government will abandon the stage of analysis of municipal services in relation to some assumptions about the works in applications submitted by municipalities, namely: “whether the areas are correct or not, whether the balconies are wider or not.”

“The mayors sign a document in which the candidate complies with the norms and rules of the competition, we trust their word and sign contracts,” the official noted, adding that “there will be time after the start of work.” say whether the candidate is suitable or not.”

Castro Almeida admitted that “there may be some small errors, more or less in one area,” but added that they can be corrected.

“The contract is being adjusted while the work is ongoing, since this is a unique opportunity to take advantage of the PRR funds,” he concluded.
