The regulator discovered an attempt at “illegal interference” by Global Media in the activities of TSF

The Social Communications Regulatory Authority (ERC) found two situations in TSF’s broadcast that may constitute an attempt at “unlawful interference” by the Global Media administration in the editorial autonomy of the radio’s news department, it announced this Thursday.

“As part of the steps taken, the Regulatory Board examined two situations during the release of the TSF that may have constituted an attempt at unlawful interference by the GMG administration. [Global Media Group] in the freedom and editorial autonomy of the relevant information departments, in violation of provisions No. 5 of Article 33 of the Radio Law and No. 2 of Article 1 of the Press Law,” reads a statement issued this Thursday by the ERC.

These steps were taken as part of the investigation process established by the regulator to determine the implications of the GMG restructuring in relation to pluralism and the preservation of the editorial line of the media, initiated on 8 January 2024 by ERC Discussion/2024/. 7 (EXIT).

In addition, the regulator says it discovered that when Domingos de Andrade was removed from his duties as TSF Information Officer, “the owner organization did not consult the relevant editorial board as it should have, in violation of the provisions of Article 33.3 of the Law on radio and in Article 13, No. 4, paragraph b) of the Statute of Journalists.”

In a statement published this Thursday – following the approval on Wednesday of the discussion concluding the investigation process – the ERC Regulatory Council also reports that it has initiated administrative proceedings against GMG in light of indications that it will not have the right to the editors of the magazines Evasões and Volta ao Mundo was ensured to participate in changes in relevant areas.

“The Council verified that there were indications that the right of participation of the editors of the magazines Evasões and Volta ao Mundo in changing their respective directions was not guaranteed, in violation of Article 19, No. 2 and No. 3, Article 23, No. 2, subparagraph a) of the Press Law, as well as Articles 13, No. 1 and 3, and No. 4, subparagraph b) of the Statute on Journalists, determined the initiation of an administrative case against the owner,” he clarifies.
