Playing at home, Francisco Pauperio chose Matosinhos to visit the market for the first time during the campaign, and to complaints he heard about low wages he responded with Livre’s proposal for a European minimum wage.
“Tomorrow I’m playing at home. I don’t know whether it will be better or worse,” he foresaw the day before.
Born in Les da Palmeira, number one Livre felt in his “habitat” on the morning spent in Matosinhos. He cannot say whether everything went better or worse, but one can say for sure that for the first time since the beginning of the election campaign, the candidate devoted himself to contacts with the population, despite his characteristic shyness.
Walking through the municipal market of Matosinhos, which at that time, around 11 a.m., was already less busy, Francisco Pauperio talked with buyers and traders. He met friends, familiar faces and others who didn’t know who he was, and, introducing himself, asked them what they wanted Europe to do for them.
There were many complaints, but there were some traders who complained about low wages in Portugal, and for Francisco Pauperio it was an ideal opportunity to talk about Livre’s proposal, which he had not yet voiced during the campaign: a European minimum wage.
“We must have European coordination and strategy to allow our salaries to approach the levels of Germany and France. This was the measure that these workers defended and that is what we will defend from June 9,” he told reporters. .
Surrounded by about a dozen supporters, carrying party flags and leaflets, Francisco Pauperio realized that although most did not recognize him, they knew Livre. A good sign, he thought.
“It’s important to know Livre’s message, our proposals, and I’m very happy because I was here in March and most people didn’t know Livre, but now they do. This is the work that we are doing in the parliamentary group with our proposals and our way of acting in politics, apparently, contributing to its growth,” he praised.
In the final stage of the first week of the campaign, this Saturday only, you will have some of the most famous faces of Livre at your side, including press secretary Rui Tavares. Another of those who joined mid-morning was Filipa Pinto, number two among the Europeans.
“Francisco is running an excellent election campaign, he conveys the Livre message very convincingly and is very confident in what we want for the country and for Europe,” the candidate said.
After a quick visit to the market, the delegation walked around the port of Leixões and the candidates handed out leaflets to people they met. Timidly and without an enthusiastic reaction from the population, it was nevertheless the day when the campaign was closest to the people.
At the end of the day, the party organizes an event in Porto dedicated to feminism, at which, in addition to Pauperio and Filipa Pinto, Rui Tavares, Jorge Pinto, elected to the legislature by the Porto circle, and co-president of the European Green Party member Melanie Vogel.
