The court scheduled the announcement of the order in the BESA case for July 15

Former Angolan banker Alvaro Sobrinho, former BES president Ricardo Salgado and former administrators Morais Pires, Rui Silveira and Helder Batalha will find out on July 15 whether they will face trial in the BESA case this Monday.

Investigating Judge Gabriela Assuncao of the Central Criminal Investigation Court (TCIC) has scheduled the announcement of the decision in the BESA (Banco Espírito Santo Angola) case for July 15 next year at 15:00. The statement was made before a break in the investigative debate, during which the defense of various accused continued.

At stake are former Banco Espirito Santo Angola (BESA) president Álvaro Sobrinho, who was accused of 18 crimes of aggravated breach of trust (five of which he was a co-author) and five of them of money laundering, as well as former BES President, Ricardo Salgado, who was charged with five crimes of breach of trust and one count of qualified fraud (all co-authors).

Also at stake are former administrators Amilcar Morais Pires, accused of breach of trust and fraud, Helder Batalha, accused of breach of trust, and Rui Silveira, who is responsible only for fraud.

The BESA indictment was announced in July 2022 and relates to BES’s provision of BESA funding in the form of interbank money market (MMI) credit lines and bank overdrafts. As a result of this criminal activity, on July 31, 2014, BES was exposed to BESA worth approximately €4.8 billion.

According to the indictment of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PP), the benefits received from the commission of the crimes charged in this investigation amount to 5,048,178,856.09 euros and 210,263,978.84 US dollars.

According to the deputy, in addition to “the amounts improperly debited from BESA accounts registered with BES in Lisbon to the accounts of corporate entities acting in his personal interests, Álvaro Sobrinho also used the liquidity available in these two accounts on several occasions.” bank accounts to cover the payment of expenses for the purchase of goods and for direct financing of the activities of other companies owned by them.”
