The Governor of the Bank of Portugal said this Friday that the Portuguese economy would not have developed so positively if it were not for immigration and that it should be respected.
“Immigration plays a decisive role, which we all in Portugal must respect, in increasing the supply of labor. What we know today about the Portuguese economy and all its indicators would not exist without the migration phenomenon, which Portugal must respect,” said Mario Centeno in the presentation of the June Economic Bulletin, which maintains the forecast for economic growth this year at 2%.
At the very beginning of the presentation at the Money Museum in Lisbon, the governor spoke several times about the importance of immigration and how it should be respected in Portugal.
According to the economist, “growth models are not possible in Europe without an adequate contribution from immigration,” which further confirms that “Portugal must respect it.”
A Banco de Portugal study included in the Economic Bulletin shows that almost half a million foreigners worked as employees in Portugal in 2023, up significantly from the 56 thousand in 2014.
In agriculture, immigrant labor already accounts for 40% of paid employment, and in hotels and restaurants – 31%.
This Monday, the government announced new immigration rules for Portugal, which were promulgated by the President of the Republic on the same day and came into force the next day.
Migration was one of the themes dominating the campaign trail for Sunday’s European elections, with the opposition criticizing both the scope and content of the government’s Migration Action Plan.
