The death toll from earthquakes in Turkey and Syria has exceeded 17,000.

At least 19,708 people were killed in earthquakes in Turkey and Syria early Monday morning. In Turkey,At least 16,546 people have died and the number has risen to 3,162 in Syria, Reuters reported.

Rescue efforts continue this Thursday in extreme temperatures to try and find survivors among the rubble.

A newborn girl was pulled alive from a collapsed building in Genderes, Syria. The mother gave birth in the wreckage, where she eventually died.

One image shared on social media shows a single father sitting in the ruins of a building holding the hand of his 15-year-old daughter, who died crushed by the ruins in Kahramanmaras, Turkey.

Serap Ela, a five-year-old girl, was rescued from rubble in Hatay, Turkey, 51 hours after an earthquake destroyed her home. Rescuers heard a voice in the middle of the rubble and after three hours of work in the area, they managed to save Serap Ela. “I am very heavy,” the girl told the rescuers when she was pulled out from under the rubble.
