A representative of school principals warned this Wednesday in Parliament that funds handed over to the Treasury at the end of last year, relating to schools’ own income, have still not been returned.
“Schools handed over money to IGeFE (Institute for Educational Financial Management) in December that has not yet been returned, and many schools are currently in need of this money,” warned the president of the National Association of Headteachers. groups and public schools (ANDAEP) Filinto Lima during a hearing on parliamentary inaction in the field of education.
The purpose of the hearing was to discuss schools’ reporting obligations in cases of suspected child abuse, but a headteachers’ representative took the moment to ask MPs for help in tackling the issue affecting educational institutions.
Each December, schools submit to the Treasury their own income generated from sales in bars, stationery stores or school-led initiatives such as premises rental.
Directors always expect a refund early next year, but year after year it is common to complain about delays in the refund, blaming the government for keeping thousands of euros in the coffers.
