The Minister of Defense announced this Thursday that Portugal will train Ukrainian soldiers on the use of combat vehicles, similar to what is being done for the F-16 fighter jets, and that availability is “immediate”.
“This involves training in artillery operations, working with tanks, in Portugal. As you know, we already have Ukrainian soldiers who are training in Portugal, in the F-16 universe. […]and now also regarding land and tanks, which are a priority,” Nuno Melo said at the end of the first day of the Atlantic Alliance ministerial meeting in Brussels.
Speaking to reporters at the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Minister of National Defense said that the signing of a protocol to train military personnel in the use of combat vehicles will take place “this afternoon.”
“Portugal is available immediately,” he added.
Nuno Melo said that during a meeting of the Contact Group on the Defense of Ukraine, led by the United States, there was an opinion that “difficulties for Russia continue to increase.”
“This is bad news for Russia, the best news for Ukraine,” he admitted, believing that the conflict is also a struggle for “civilizational values.”
