“Normal life has been restored” at the Ricardo Jorge National Institute of Health in Porto after the fifth and sixth floors were evacuated this Friday due to a nitric acid spill, the city commander of Sapadores told Lusa.
“All hazardous materials were contained, the premises and operators involved were decontaminated and all necessary measures were taken. Once this was done, it was possible to return to the premises and normal life was restored,” explained Carlos Márquez.
The spill injured five people Friday morning. One of the victims, a woman between 40 and 50 years old, suffered facial burns and was in serious condition, while the other four people were injured as a result of gas poisoning.
The injured were taken to the Sant Joan hospital in Porto.
The alarm was raised at 11:30 and several members of the Porto Sapadores fire brigade, INEM, PSP and municipal police were mobilized to the scene.
