The G7 countries, the group of seven of the world’s most industrialized democracies, supported the Olympic Truce this Friday and called on all countries to respect it in a declaration adopted at the summit in southern Italy.
“We look forward to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris 2024 and call on all countries to respect the Olympic Truce, individually and collectively,” said the conclusions of the document signed by Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United States. United Kingdom.
The heads of state and government of the G7 countries, meeting until this Friday at a hotel in the Italian region of Puglia, recalled that the truce was approved on November 21 by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
Despite this, Russia, Ukraine’s occupier, abstained in protest of its expulsion from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, ahead of the Paralympics from August 28 to September 8.
Traditionally, the UN declares an Olympic truce, which begins a week before the Games and ends a week after them.
The Olympic truce requires guns to remain silent during the weeks during which the competition takes place, but never in recent decades have the Games coincided with two global wars, such as the conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.
The initiative was supported by leaders such as Pope Francis, French President Emmanuel Macron and China’s Xi Jinping.
