“City of Rock”, installed for the first time in the Tagus Park, will open this Saturday at 13:00, marking the start of the 10th Rock in Rio Lisbon, which in its first weekend dedicates one day to rock and the other to families.
Under the motto “Everything in Rio,” the festival program includes dozens of concerts, presentations and performances located in 17 entertainment venues, five of which are stages.
This Saturday, a day dedicated to rock, is sold out.
The main concerts will take place at Palco Mundo, which begins this Saturday with Xutos & Pontapés, accompanied by the Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra, and ends with Scorpons, also welcoming Evanescent and Extreme.
Before the headliner’s performance, Palco Mundo holds a video mapping show.
Other music-themed stages this Saturday will include Europe, Hybrid Theory, Pluto, Living Color, Peste & Sida, Blind Zero, Rival Sons and The Legendary Tigerman, among others.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Rock in Rio in Portugal, there’s no shortage of Ferris wheels, slides and Rock Street, but there are also new features such as Cupid’s House, where Elvis will perform. Presley and Amy Winehouse are ready to celebrate a symbolic wedding.
Cupid’s House is one of the landmarks on Highway 85 created to “tell in a very playful way” the story of Rock’s 20th anniversary in Rio Lisbon and Rock’s 40th anniversary in Rio Brazil, which are celebrated in January 2025 but will be celebrated in this year.
The Tagus Palace, created to welcome the Pope during World Youth Day last August, will host another new festival space, the All Experience.
“Everyone under 30 [da equipa do Rock in Rio Lisboa] created an exhibition dedicated to the themes of a better world,” explained Roberta Medina. The result will be visible during the festival.
With the move from Parque da Bela Vista to Parque Tejo, the festival site gained “an additional 30,000 square meters of public space,” which the organization said allowed for “more bathrooms and more food and drink areas.”
For those who don’t want to buy water, there will be “more than a hundred drinking fountains” on site, “for the convenience of the public and to avoid plastic bottles.”
Although the venue is larger, the festival’s capacity remains at a maximum of 80,000 people per day, with “the biggest challenge for the public being access.”
To get to the new festival site, the organization recommends using public transport.
This Saturday, Sunday, and June 22 and 23, a shuttle will run between Estação do Oriente and the “city of stone.”
According to Rock in Rio Lisboa director Roberta Medina, there will be an exclusive shuttle route between Estação do Oriente and the entrance to the site where the Rock in Rio station will be installed.
Shuttle tickets cost one euro if purchased in advance through the festival app and entitle you to a reusable cup.
“Who notes [as viagens de ‘shuttle’] You only pay two euros a day and you don’t get a cup,” warned Roberta Medina.
Tickets can be purchased on site, but to avoid queues, organizers recommend using the “app”.
Additionally, anyone who decides to take the train can get off at Sakavem station and walk the rest of the way to the venue, which “takes five minutes.”
Sunday at the Rock in Rio Lisbon will be a day dedicated to families, with performances from Fernando Daniel, Zhao, Calum Scott and Ed Sheeran at Palco Mundo.
Other stages will include Jake Bugg, Carolina de Deus, Lukas Graham, Diego Miranda, Neina, Iñigo Quintero, Lauren Spencer Smith and Captain Fausto, among others.
