France’s victory in the first match of Euro 2024 was overshadowed by an injury to Kylian Mbappe.
The striker, who moved from PSG to Real Madrid, broke his nose and left the field bleeding heavily. The athlete, who was facing surgery, could miss the Gauls’ next game against the Netherlands.
The reaction to what happened was not long in coming and became the subject of commentary among Portuguese politicians.
Rita Mathias, Chegi’s deputy, shared a photo of the French star with the caption: “Well… France to the French.” The 25-year-old politician, who has been the target of much criticism, explained: “Don’t worry, I just assumed that the player was sticking his nose where he didn’t belong…”
The comment is being interpreted as a response to Mbappe’s recent statements urging young people to vote as a way to combat the rise of extremism.
“We are experiencing a decisive moment in the history of our country. The situation is unprecedented, so I appeal to the French and the younger generation who can change the situation. I encourage young people to vote, we see that extremists are on the verge of power, we have the opportunity to choose the future of our country,” he said at a pre-conference for the game in which he will be injured.
