Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa convenes the Council of State on July 15.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, convened the Council of State on July 15.

“The President of the Republic convened the Council of State next year, on July 15, at 15:30, in the Belem Palace, to analyze the situation in Ukraine, in the context of the Peace Summit in Switzerland, the NATO Summit in Switzerland. Washington and the Meeting of the European Political Community in the United Kingdom,” – says the presidency website.

Head of State Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa took part in a conference on peace issues in Ukraine held last weekend in Switzerland.

The NATO summit in Washington is scheduled for July 9-11, and the fourth meeting of the European Political Community will be held on July 18 in the UK.

This will be the 35th meeting of the Council of State during the mandate of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The last one took place on March 27, dedicated to the political situation in Madeira, with the participation of members of the Council of State elected by Parliament in the previous legislature.

On Wednesday, the Assembly of the Republic elected the respective five members of the State Council of the current legislature from the joint list of the SDP, PS and Chegi, depending on their parliamentary representation.

The members of the State Council nominated by the PSD, Francisco Pinto Balseman and Carlos Moedas, nominated by the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos and Carlos Cesar, and Chega Andre Ventura, were elected.

Pinto Balseman and Carlos César were already members of the Council of State of the previous legislature through election by parliament. Manuel Alegre, Sampaio da Novoa and Miguel Cadille are no longer advisors.

The members of this political advisory body, chaired by the head of state, are essentially persons holding the positions of President of the Assembly of the Republic, Prime Minister, President of the Constitutional Court, Ombudsman, Chairmen of regional governments and former Presidents of the Republic.

According to the terms of the Constitution, it also includes five citizens appointed by the head of state and five elected by the Assembly of the Republic.
