The mayor of Albufeira said this Friday that he will develop a code of conduct in public places to regulate behavior and excesses in nightlife areas.
The decision was made by the mayor after an emergency meeting with security forces and tourism sector associations following “excessive behavior by foreign tourists in broad daylight” that occurred on the Rua da Oura over the weekend, the municipality said in a statement.
“The invitation to these class structures was with the intention of raising awareness among businessmen associated with the above-mentioned structures so that they do not tolerate behavioral excesses occurring in and around their establishments,” the note said.
José Carlos Rolo, mentioned in the note, regrets that Albufeira’s image is “undermined by incidents like those that occurred in bars”, especially in Rua da Oura, when the rest of the municipality “is safe and calm”. .
In order to “limit excesses” and after listening to the opinions of the authorities, economic and tourist agents, José Carlos Rolo “decided to create a code of conduct that will be applied in public places of the municipality, and it is necessary to create a commission responsible for its preparation,” highlights the note.
The creation of a commission and a meeting with the Minister of the Interior, Margarida Blasco, are, according to the municipality, “the next steps.”
The mayor adds that he understands the need for social spaces and nightlife, but states that he is “determined to limit the attitudes and behavior of some visitors when venturing outside the municipality with its own culture and identity.”
