Former finance minister João Leão said there was a “significant risk” that the 2025 government budget (OE) would fail. In an interview with Lusa, the former governor stressed that neither of the “two main opposition parties would like to make the budget viable and would like the other party to make it viable.” If this scenario is confirmed, João Leão suggested that there could be early elections.
“Although I am convinced that it is possible to implement the MA on the basis of twelfths in 2025, it can be understood that maintaining this decision for more than a year is too long,” said the former chairman of the PS government, pointing out the need for the risk of creating “a sense of uncertainty.” Following warnings from the Bank of Portugal (BDP), he fears that a “deficit” could emerge from next year, proposing “a more sustainable solution in terms of decision-making mechanisms” at parliamentary level, given that the government is a minority.
