UEFA today announced increased security measures to prevent pitch incursions by fans during the European Football Championship in Germany.
The decision came after several incidents, most recently on Saturday when at least six fans entered the pitch to try to get a selfie with Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Additional security measures will be taken at stadiums to better meet the requirements of the tournament and prevent similar incidents,” UEFA said, without specifying the content of measures to prevent “malicious actors” from being subject to criminal prosecution.
UEFA reminds that “any pitch invasion constitutes a breach of stadium rules and will result in the removal of the stadium, a ban from attendance at the remaining matches of the tournament and the initiation of a formal criminal investigation into intrusion.”
Several fans took to the pitch in Dortmund on Saturday to confront Cristiano Ronaldo, who was again harassed by several fans late in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Turkey in the second round of Group F. which interrupted several matches.
Although fans seem to just want to take a photo with their idol, this UEFA plan is aimed at protecting footballers from any danger.
Pitch intrusions are starting to repeat themselves: one of the Euro 2024 offenders filmed Belgian Kevin De Bruyne in a match against Slovakia in Frankfurt.
The Champions League final in London between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund saw several pitch invasions allegedly motivated by an offer of money from a famous YouTuber.
When today’s games are played, more than half of Euro 2024’s targets will have been completed – 26 of the 51 in the program that ends on July 14.
