“The Guardia Military has seized 53 tons of blue shark that were in transit through the port of Leixões and were caught by a Portuguese vessel in the South Atlantic Ocean,” the GNR said in a statement.
The fish raised suspicions about compliance with CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and illegal fin trimming.
Also known as the dyer, blue shark (Prionace glauca) is one of the species protected by the CITES convention, and its trade has very strict rules.
