PJ today destroyed seven tons of drugs seized in recent months

The Judicial Police (JP) will destroy this Wednesday about seven tons of various types of illegal drugs seized in recent months by the criminal police, customs and security services.

In a statement issued on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the SP explained that in accordance with the current legislation, seized drugs are destroyed immediately after the Police Scientific Laboratory has carried out the relevant examinations ordered by the judicial authorities. , with only one sample kept in a safe until a final decision is made.

The destruction is carried out by burning under the supervision of a commission consisting of a magistrate from the prosecutor’s office, a member of the criminal investigation department of the judicial police and an expert from the scientific police laboratory.

According to PJ, approximately 22 tons of cocaine, 38 tons of hashish and smaller quantities of other types of drugs were seized in 2023.

Global cocaine production hit a record high of 2,757 tons in 2022, up 20% from 2021, according to the World Drug Report 2024 released today by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The document, released in Vienna, said the global area under coca bush cultivation increased by 12% between 2021 and 2022, to 355 thousand hectares.

New synthetic opioids and record supply and demand for other drugs have worsened the impact of this global problem, leading to an increase in drug use disorders and environmental damage, according to the report.

According to published data, the number of users has increased to 292 million in 2022, an increase of 20% in 10 years, with cannabis continuing to be the most consumed drug in the world (228 million users), followed by opiates (60 million), amphetamines (30 million). million), cocaine (23 million) and ecstasy (20 million).

Nitazenes, a group of synthetic opioids that can be even more potent than fentanyl, have recently appeared in several high-income countries, leading to an increase in overdose deaths.

Although approximately 64 million people worldwide suffer from drug use disorders, only one in 11 receives treatment.
