Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro congratulated future NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte this Wednesday, expressing Portugal’s “unwavering commitment” to defending the principles enshrined in the North Atlantic Treaty.
Rutte, 57, the current prime minister of the Netherlands, will succeed Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg as secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on October 1.
“I am confident that with your extensive experience and leadership, we will continue to strengthen NATO’s role as a guarantor of peace and security in these difficult times. You can count on Portugal’s support and our unwavering commitment to defending the established principles of the North Atlantic Treaty,” wrote Luis Montenegro in a congratulatory message on the social network X.
Mark Rutte’s appointment was confirmed this Wednesday following a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s main political decision-making body.
Luis Montenegro will take part in the NATO summit, which will be held from July 9 to 11 in Washington and will be dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Jens Stoltenberg, 65, former Prime Minister of Norway, has been NATO Secretary General since 1 October 2014.
Under his leadership, NATO gained four new members, joining Montenegro (2017), North Macedonia (2020), Finland (2023) and Sweden (2024).
Finland and Sweden joined the defense organization following Russia’s war against Ukraine, which began with Russia’s invasion of the neighboring country in February 2022.
Portugal is one of the 12 countries in Europe and North America that founded NATO in 1949.
