Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez sentenced to 45 years in prison for drug trafficking

Former President of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernandez, 55 years old, was sentenced this Wednesday in New York to 45 years in prison for drug trafficking and a fine of eight million dollars (about 7,500,000 euros).

Second El PaisTraffickers with whom the politician was associated for decades paid bribes to ensure the delivery of more than 400 tons of cocaine to the United States. The sentence, according to the court, is “a warning to well-educated and well-dressed people who gain power and think that their status protects them from justice.”

Juan Hernandez was found guilty in March in Manhattan federal court. after the trial, which began in February.

According to the newspaper, US authorities accuse the former president of using his country’s police, army and judicial system to “protect” drug traffickers.
