A 69-year-old orthopedic doctor suspected of sexually assaulting two minors during a consultation at Famalican Hospital has been released. Shift Judge Povoa de Lañoso ruled that the man was prohibited from performing clinical duties as well as contact with minors.
Carlos Burmester had already been suspended from his duties at the Vila Nova de Famalicão hospital, where the alleged abuses took place. It involved sexual contact with two boys, aged 8 and 10, during a consultation in the emergency department.
The latter incident led to the doctor’s arrest. It happened on the 19th of this month, and the mother of one of the boys immediately reported the inappropriate behavior to the orthopedist. The complaint was filed at the hospital and at the police headquarters, which forwarded the case to the Braga court.
The doctor was arrested on Thursday and was released along with his family member on Saturday after more than three hours of questioning by the judge on duty.
