Former striker and coach Manuel Fernandes will be honoured with a minute’s silence ahead of Portugal’s Euro 2024 last-16 clash with Slovenia this Monday, UEFA has confirmed.
The request was made by the Portuguese Football Federation and UEFA has already confirmed at a match management meeting that it has been accepted.
Former footballer and coach Manuel Fernandez died on Thursday at the age of 73 after a long illness. He was capped 30 times for Portugal, scoring seven goals.
Manuel Fernandes, born in Sarrillos Pequenos, in Moite, on June 5, 1951, made his name as a player, especially with Sporting, between 1975/76 and 1986/87, and also played for 1. de Maio Sarrillhanse, CUF and Vitoria de Setubal.
After finishing his playing career, Manuel Fernandes remained involved in football as a coach, managing Vitoria de Setúbal, Estrela da Amadora, Ovarense, Sporting, Campomaiorense, Tirsense, Santa Clara, Penafiel and União de Leiria, and in between coaching in Angola, at ASA.
European football’s governing body also confirmed that the roof of the Deutsche Bank Park stadium in Frankfurt, Germany, where the match will be held, will be closed during the game.
The match between Portugal and Slovenia will start at 21:00 local time (20:00 Lisbon time) and will be officiated by Italian Daniele Orsato.
