According to information from Deco Proteste, a consumer protection association, the cost of a basket of essentials has broken a new record. Between February 23, 2022 – on the eve of the invasion of Ukraine – and February 9, 2023, the supermarket bill increased by more than 41 euros (+22.5%), and now it costs 224.92 euros. Deco tracks the prices of 63 staple foods weekly with the largest retail groups such as chicken, hake, horse mackerel, carrots, potatoes, rice or milk. The purchase of this set of goods cost 183.63 euros a year ago. It is now reaching its highest value (€224.92) since Proteste started collecting this data. The cost of energy and raw materials has driven up inflation, especially for unprocessed foodstuffs, which rose by 18.5% in January compared to the same month in 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics. According to Deco, six products stand out. If we compare prices as of February 23, 2022 with prices registered at the beginning of this month, then the largest increase is observed for heart-shaped cabbage (67% more), curly lettuce (64%), fresh hake (63%), horse mackerel. (63%), tomato pulp (61%) and Carolina rice (59%).
