Study Finds Listerine Elixir Use ‘May Increase Cancer Risk’

A new study shows Listerine Cool Mint mouthwash ‘may increase cancer risk’ and warns ‘most people should not use it’.

In accordance with Daily mailExperts at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, found that two types of bacteria, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Streptococcus anginosus, which are linked to the disease, became more common after three months of daily use of the product. Daily use of mouthwash may increase the risk of esophageal and pancreatic cancer, according to a new scientific study.

It is believed that alcohol contained in mouthwash may increase the level of bacteria in the mouth, said Chris Kenyon, a professor and university scientist who worked on the study. Daily Telegraph quoted Daily mailthat using mouthwash “may increase the risk of cancer and various infections.”

“Most people shouldn’t use it, and if they do, they should use non-alcoholic products and limit their use to a couple of days,” he added.

The discovery was made during an investigation into the impact of daily mouthwash use on the risk of sexually transmitted infections among gay men.
