Spanish Government President Pedro Sánchez received this Thursday the elected President of the European Council, António Costa, a “consensus falsifier” with those who want to improve Europe’s competitiveness, tackle climate change and guarantee peace.
“Today I met the President-elect of the European Council, my great friend António Costa. We have five years ahead of us that we will dedicate to making the European Union more competitive, creating more and better jobs, combating climate change and guaranteeing peace in Europe,” Pedro Sánchez wrote on the social network X.
António Costa was received at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid, the seat of the Spanish government.
“Dear António, I have complete confidence in you as the organizer of consensus among European leaders. Good luck!” the socialist leader of the Spanish executive wished in the same publication.
Former Portuguese Prime Minister Costa was elected a week ago by the heads of state and government of the European Union (EU) as President of the European Council for a two-and-a-half-year term and will take office on December 1 this year.
António Costa will become the first Portuguese and the first Socialist to lead the European Council, replacing Belgian Charles Michel (in office since 2019) as head of the European Council, which brings together the heads of government and state of the European Union.
The leaders of the 27 member states also nominated Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as head of the European Commission and appointed Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Both options are to be put to a vote in the European Parliament.
