Hurricane Beryl kills 10 in Venezuela and Caribbean

At least 10 people have already died in Venezuela and several Caribbean countries due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl, which left a trail of destruction in the region with winds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour and heavy rains.

In Jamaica, thousands of people were forced to flee their homes for safety and stay in temporary shelters. Power outages were widespread and some roads near the coast were flooded. On two small islands in Grenada, the storm destroyed about 98% of the buildings: “We’re going to have to rebuild everything from scratch. It was like Armageddon,” the prime minister said.

Hurricane Beryl weakened Thursday as it headed toward the Cayman Islands and Mexico. Mexican authorities declared a state of alert and prepared shelters, ordered schools to close, evacuated the fishing village of Punta Allen and even removed sea turtle eggs from beaches threatened by the storm. The alert extended to the tourist areas of Tulum, Cancun and Playa del Carmen, where thousands of tourists were evacuated.
