The Labour Party won an absolute majority in the UK legislature on Friday, electing 332 MPs for a total of 650 seats, with 176 still to be counted, according to official preliminary results published by the British network BBC.
The Labour Party needed 326 MPs to govern with an overall majority, but forecasts point to a more comfortable margin.
The victory puts Keir Starmer, the leader of the party that won the most votes, on track to be appointed prime minister by King Charles III after the final results.
UK Prime Minister-elect Keir Starmer said on Friday that “change starts now” for the country, which after 14 years of Conservative rule can “reclaim its future”.
“You know, I have to be honest. Four and a half years of work to change the party. This is what we did it for: a transformed party ready to serve our country, ready to rebuild the United Kingdom in the service of workers,” he said after his victory in the British legislature in a televised speech to trade unionists in London.
“All across our country, people are waking up to this news, relieved that a burden has been lifted, a burden has finally been lifted from the shoulders of this great nation,” he said.
Starmer was re-elected with 48.9% of the vote (64.5% in 2019), beating independent Andrew Feinstein, who won 18.9%.
In his speech after the results were announced, Starmer thanked them for their support and promised to protect everyone, including those who did not vote for him.
