The parliamentary debate this Thursday clearly showed that all parties defend the police, but none of them wants to endorse Chega’s initiatives (with the exception, interestingly, of the Bloc de Esquerda and PAN), even if they benefit the security forces. André Ventura believed that the previous government had “committed a historic injustice in the police and security forces” when it merely changed the salaries of the SP. Chega was criticized for taking control of the security forces and pitting MPs. Hugo Soares, the leader of the PSD college, accused Ventura of pretending to be a “unionist” by “humiliating the security forces and services.” The MP supported the government’s proposal: “300 euros is a lot of money, and that’s what the public accounts allow us to do.” Socialist Isabel Moreira said “the security forces are not adequate” and accused Luis Montenegro of issuing “an ultimatum that has blocked negotiations.” Rui Rocha was harsh with André Ventura, whom he accused of wanting to “give MPs freedom”. “What he was trying to do is the practice that we know from BE and PCP”, he concluded. João Almeida of CDS argued that “whoever wears a uniform in the name of the country” does not deserve “to have politicians take responsibility for him”, while Fabião Figueiredo of BE believed that “salaries are so low that many agents add bonus services so that the salary is extended until the end of the month”. António Filipe of PCP recalled that “the police do not pay the rent with praise”.
