What is the balance of power in the French parliament?

The left-wing New Popular Front alliance managed to stop what appeared to be an early victory for the far right in the second round of France’s legislative elections on Sunday. The New Popular Front won 182 seats in the National Assembly, followed by President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Alliance (163) and Marine Le Pen’s National Union, which came in third with 143 seats.

If no party can secure an absolute majority – 289 of the 577 seats in the National Assembly – a period of negotiations begins that promises to be difficult to form a government.

For now, French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to keep Gabriel Attal as prime minister to “ensure the country’s stability” during this transitional phase.
