Slovakia’s Prime Minister Returns to Work Almost Two Months After Assassination Attempt

Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico returned to work on Tuesday, nearly two months after an assassination attempt that left him with several surgeries and two weeks in hospital.

After Fico was shot dead by a gunman leaving a Council of Ministers meeting in the municipality of Handlova, Fico returned to his office, despite still having difficulty standing for long periods.

Fico has made four public appearances since the attack on 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, who has been in custody since then, and has maintained contact with Slovakia’s Defence Minister Robert Kalinak throughout the entire period.

Slovakia’s prime minister announced on Monday that the country has no intention of lifting its ban on agricultural imports from Ukraine. The issue has been ongoing for months and has sparked major protests in the Slovak sector and in other neighboring countries whose production has been jeopardized.

Bratislava has already explained several times that the measure approved by the European Union (EU) to exempt Ukrainian agricultural products caused losses to Slovak producers and farmers in the amount of more than 100 million euros.
