About two dozen private hospital nurses gathered late Tuesday in Lisbon for a protest that marks the start of a two-day strike demanding better working conditions.
During the protest, organised by the Portuguese Nurses Union (SEP) in front of the Portuguese Association of Private Hospitalisation (APHP), protesters shouted slogans such as “It is urgent and necessary to raise salaries”, “Profits are in the millions, for nurses only pennies” and “35 hours for everyone without delay”.
At the front of the concentration, nurses hung a banner summarizing their demands: “Wages + shift compensation + 35 hours,” while others held SWP flags and signs reading “I disagree! I’m going on strike.”
During the protest, a resolution handed to the APHP by SEP union leader Rui Marroni was approved “with unanimity and approval,” stating that “the SEP is ready to negotiate,” he told the Lusa news agency.
“If there are no negotiations, naturally the struggle and demands will continue because the nurses are unhappy and the proof of this is the high level of our participation in the strike,” said Rui Marroni, who has not yet collected data on joining the strike.
