William Stampfl, an American, was 59 when he disappeared in June 2002 after an avalanche on Mount Huascaran in Yungay Province, Peru, buried his climbing party. His mummified remains were found 22 years later.
In accordance with IndependentThe body, clothing, climbing gear and passport were found preserved by the cold. The documents allowed police to identify William’s body.
Peruvian police told AFP the body was found after ice melted in the Andes.
William Stampfl’s body is the second mummified body found in the Andes. The remains of a climber who disappeared in the mountain range 41 years ago were found last year. Marta Emilia Altamirano died during an expedition in March 1981.
According to the same source, Peru has lost more than half of its glacier surface in the last six decades. The World Meteorological Organization said the previous decade was the warmest on record, leading to melting of the polar ice caps.
