PGR interview leaves sides divided

Lucilia Gago’s first interview as Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) left the parties with divided seats in Parliament. On the left, the leader of the Public Ministry (MP) needed more explanations, while on the right there was a tendency to confirm some of the positions taken by the PGR in statements made on Monday evening on RTP.

PS MP Isabel Moreira accused Lucilia Gago of “violating the secrecy of justice” and asked “how the PGR can claim that the investigation is ongoing” if former Prime Minister António Costa “was heard and was not named as an accused” in the ‘Influential Person’ case.

As for BE, Fabião Figueiredo demanded to know “what motivated the deputy’s actions,” as the prosecutor claimed, while António Filipe of the PCP said the interview did not address “the issue.” [das violações] judicial secrecy” and sent it to a parliamentary hearing accepted by the PGR. Paulo Muacho of Livre rejected “the idea of an organized campaign aimed at casting doubt on the MP”, an expression used by Lucilia Gago.

On the right, Rui Rocha of Illinois said the interview “ended up with a theory of a judicial coup” with the “Influencer” trial, and supported the PGR’s position on Costa’s dismissal. “These are personal decisions, otherwise what prevented him from continuing in government should prevent him from running for the European Council,” he said.

Through André Ventura, Chega was the only party that claimed “that there is an organised campaign against those who carry out investigations to convey the idea that there is some kind of new PIDE.”

Andre Ventura, President of Chega
“The members of the public ministry believed that political power was called upon to exert pressure, to inflict damage, to try to condition justice.”

Rui Rock, President of IL
“Those who supported the coup d’état theory have stopped this activity because no one believes in this theory anymore.”

Ines Souza is real,
Representative of PAN
“If the prosecutor’s office fails, it must apologize, no matter who the citizen is who is the target of the abuses in the investigations or complaints.”

Campaign
“There is actually an organized campaign [contra o Ministério Público] “people who shouldn’t be doing this,” Lucilia Gago accused in her first interview with PGR.

Coast
If the investigation is aimed at Former Prime Minister António Costa has not yet been consigned to the archives, “because something is preventing it,” Lucilia Gago also said.

Marcelo
The PGR rejected the claim that the opening of the twins’ files on November 7, 2023 and the search for S. Bento were deliberate, as suggested by President Marcelo.
