The verdict in the “Operation Malapata” case, which has football businessman Cesar Boaventura as its main defendant and which is investigating the transfers of athletes, has been postponed until September 3, a judicial source told Lusa on Wednesday.
Originally scheduled for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Sao Joao Novo court in Porto, the hearing was postponed by a group of judges for almost two months due to the complexity of the process and was set for early September, from 2 p.m.
On June 20, in the latest indictments in the so-called Operation Malapata, which is investigating player transfers and bank accounts through which thousands of euros passed, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) requested eight to 10 years in prison for Cesar Boaventura and increased the sentences for the other defendants to the legal minimum, but with a suspended sentence.
The businessman is accused of five crimes related to qualified fraud, three of document forgery, one of qualified tax fraud and one of money laundering.
In February, Cesar Boaventura was sentenced to a total of three years and four months in prison, suspended, for three offences related to active corruption in football.
The Matosinhos court found that former Rio Ave players Cassio, Marcelo and Lyonne were hired to facilitate the fight against Benfica in the 2015/16 season in exchange for financial and contractual compensation, but cleared the businessman of attempted corruption against former Marítimo goalkeeper Romain Salin.
