Spanish prosecutors seek 226 years in prison for Portugal’s quadruple murderer

The Madrid prosecutor’s office in Spain is seeking 226 years in prison for Mikael Montoya, known as “El Portugues”, who was tried in a court in the capital of the neighbouring country for killing four people by running them over and injuring nine others after they were thrown out of a wedding.

The facts date back to November 6, 2022 and took place in Torrejón de Ardoz, Madrid. Mikael Montoya and his family went to a wedding organized by a rival family and, due to this disagreement, they were denied entry. Despite the obstacles, “El Portugues”, his wife and other family members attended the wedding.

The prosecution claims that Mikael Montoya even exchanged aggression with several gifts and took some of the money that was supposed to go to the bride and groom. As a result, the entire El Portugues family was thrown out of the wedding venue.

The defendant, his underage son and two nephews got into a car, and the Portuguese attacked the crowd of guests. He killed four people and wounded nine. He was arrested the day after the tragedy and placed in a pretrial detention center.

Mikael Montoya’s indictment says the hit-and-runs “occurred with the defendant’s full desire and ability to cause the deaths of the victims.” He is also charged with driving without liability insurance.

In closing arguments in the case, the prosecutor asked for the maximum sentence of 226 years in prison for the Portuguese defendant.

Remember that the maximum sentence provided for in the Spanish Penal Code is 40 years. However, there is the possibility of life imprisonment in the case of very serious crimes. It has been applied since 2016 and is subject to review after 40 years of imprisonment.
