A fire that broke out in the spire of a cathedral in Rouen, a city in northwestern France, was contained in the afternoon, firefighters said.
The fire, which mainly affected plastic coverings on a platform used for restoration work on the spire, is “under control, but at the moment there is no guarantee that it will be extinguished,” said Stefan Guezek, director of the local fire and rescue service.
The incident was reported on social media by the mayor of Rouen (Normandy region), Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, who posted a photo of a cloud of smoke coming from scaffolding around the cathedral tower.
The alarm was received at 12:00. 63 firefighters with the support of 33 units of equipment worked at the scene.
The area around the cathedral was evacuated by police to facilitate the intervention.
Rouen Cathedral is one of the most famous and visited Gothic buildings in France thanks to a series of paintings by the impressionist artist Claude Monet, who painted the monument from different angles and at different times of day.
