Over the past year and the first half of this year, the Ombudsman’s Office received 128 tax-related complaints, and nearly two-thirds (63%) involved issues within the IRS’s purview, namely capital gains.
In response to Lusa’s questions, an official source in the Ombudsman’s office said that in 2023, the body headed by María Lucía Amaral received 79 tax complaints, 50 of which were under the jurisdiction of the IRS.
In the first half of this year, 49 new complaints have already been received, 31 of which concern income tax from private taxpayers.
Among the 31 cases registered this year, capital gains from real estate stand out (nine in total), followed by liquidation complaints (seven), tax relief (five) and international double taxation (four complaints).
Next on the list of taxes that generate the most complaints is VAT, with 13 such cases in 2023, and a further seven cases filed with the Ombudsman’s Office between January and June this year.
Complaints about taxes are only a part of those received by the office of the tax ombudsman, which, according to the same data, amounted to 160 in 2023, and another 73 were registered in the first half of this year.
