Mozambique police have arrested two men with two ivory horns in Cabo Delgado.

Mozambican police have arrested two people who were in possession of two ivory horns while they were about to sell them in the city of Pemba, capital of Cabo Delgado province, a source from the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) told Luce this Friday.

“We understand [do caso] through our operational lines. One of the men was arrested on the 8th while he was taking cigarette butts to his home to deliver them to a buyer,” said Noemia João, Sernic’s representative in Cabo Delgado.

The 42-year-old man arrested with the ivory arrowheads in Pemba identified a second man, a resident of Palma district, as the owner of the goods, the spokesman said.

“The second suspect, aged 33, was arrested on the 9th in Palma, where cigarette butts weighing 29 kilograms were taken three months ago,” said Noemia João.

Poaching is a major threat to wildlife in Mozambique, but authorities estimate that elephant killings have fallen in recent years thanks to law enforcement and conservation efforts.

According to ANAC, there are about ten thousand elephants in Mozambique.
