The government will begin talks with the military to improve their pay, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said following the NATO summit in the United States. The chief executive promised to move forward with “improving support conditions for former combatants, incentives to make military careers more attractive and updating salaries.” As in the case of the security forces, they did not want to “commit to quantity” before the negotiations. And he acknowledged the “patience” of the military, “going alongside” the negotiation process with the PSP and the GNR, “which, indirectly, also concerned them.” The recognition of the career will be extended to the entire system of state administration, “without prejudice to the balance of state accounts.” Socialist Party leader Pedro Nuno Santos said the Armed Forces “cannot be excluded” from salary negotiations and stressed the “good budgetary situation” left by the Socialist government.
