The verdict pronounced by Abel Ferreira, the Palmeiras coach, opened a controversial front in Brazil. In the context of explaining the team’s dynamics, the Portuguese coach at one point said: “This is not an Indian team.” The implication that the Indians were disorganized was quickly criticized in several quarters, and accusations of xenophobia soon emerged. Especially since the declaration directly contradicts a federal law known as the Racism Law.
The coach later responded with a statement. “I have been living and working in Brazil since 2020 and I have deep respect for all Brazilians. People already know my character, my behavior and my social actions. You also know that I completely reject all forms of prejudice,” Abel Ferreira said. The club also defended him.
On the field, Palmeiras beat Atlético Goias (3-1). They share the lead in the Brasileirão with Botafogo (owned by Artur Jorge), who beat Vitoria (1-0). Both teams have 33 points.
