Marcelo condemns attack on Trump, calls for fight against political violence

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed on Sunday the “strongest condemnation” of the attack on former US President Donald Trump and called for a decisive fight against political violence.

This position of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is contained in a note published on the website of the President of the Republic, in which the head of the Portuguese state “expresses the strongest condemnation” of the attack on Donald Trump.

“The president [da República] expresses condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured. The President calls for a decisive fight against political violence and with full respect for democratic values,” the note from the President of the Republic reads.

Donald Trump was shot in the ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening.

Two people were killed, including the alleged attacker, who was shot dead by security forces, and two others were wounded. The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.

Early this morning, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also condemned the attack on former US President Donald Trump, whom he wished a speedy recovery.

“I strongly condemn the attack on former President Donald Trump and wish him a speedy recovery. Political violence is completely intolerable and must be systematically combated by democratic countries,” Luis Montenegro wrote on the social network X.
