Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Doherty moved to Los Angeles with her family at age 7 and became an actress shortly thereafter. She gained fame for her role as Brenda Walsh on the original Beverly Hills, 90210, which premiered in October 1990.
After the series won over audiences, Doherty joined the cast of Charmed as Prue Halliwell, the eldest of the three witch sisters. In addition to being the main character, she also directed several episodes.
