Bath time can be a difficult time for many parents. But are you bathing your baby too often?
According to Mirrorthe number of times you bathe your baby changes as they grow. Dr Sam Hay, a pediatrician, reveals the bath frequency you should consider.
For this reason, contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to bathe a newborn every day. Sam recommends doing it every “2-3 days.”
It also suggests that you “avoid harsh soaps that can irritate your baby’s sensitive skin” and instead opt for “gentler bath oils that cleanse and moisturize at the same time.”
Already at preschool and primary school age, therefore between 3 and 10 years, the doctor states that daily baths “may seem necessary”, but from a health point of view “a bath every 2 days” is sufficient.
As for adolescence, the expert explains that due to hormonal changes, sweating and, in some cases, skin issues like acne, teenagers “should shower every day.”
“Your skin is constantly getting dirty and problems like acne arise,” the doctor says. “In general, at this stage they need to shower every day,” he adds.
However, he notes that it is important to use gentle products to care for fragile skin and to be aware that over-bathing can damage the skin.
“Over-bathing removes moisturizing oils, causing dryness, itching and even infections,” says the expert.
To minimise skin problems, Sam advises taking ‘warm’ baths, avoiding harsh soaps and reducing the frequency of baths ‘if possible’.
