Two Portuguese tourists have been ordered to pay €10,800 in compensation for destroying a statue in the Galician city of Vigo, Spain.
The vandalism occurred in April 2022, when the couple was attending a stag party. The Portuguese tore off several parts of the sculpture depicting the family and took them to a rented house.
The convicts, who were 33 and 34 years old at the time, had no intention of selling the stolen artifacts (the torsos of a mother and child), but rather kept them as “souvenirs.”
Although the criminal acts were committed early in the morning, between 2am and 2.30am, the Portuguese were caught by witnesses who followed them to their rented house and alerted the police.
The suspects arrested for vandalism faced a two-year prison sentence, but for disrespecting cultural heritage they were sentenced to pay compensation to the municipality of Vigo, local media reported.
Over the years, the works of Galician Manuel García Vázquez, better known as Buciños, after his homeland, have been vandalized several times. The latest attack occurred in December 2022, when the figure of a girl was damaged.
