Portuguese football competitions will apply a “captain rule” that will place restrictions on players’ interactions with the referee, with the situation being limited to captains, the federation (FPF) announced on Thursday.
“If the team captain is the goalkeeper, a field player must be designated to address the referee during games,” the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said in a statement to the Arbitration Council (HERE).
CA will apply this rule in Portugal from next season (2024/2025), similar to what was decided in other European national championships, namely Belgium and Germany.
“This is a measure tested at the recent European Championship, according to which only the team captain will be able to address the match referee,” the FPF reminded in a note published on its official page.
