International Court rules Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories illegal

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled on Friday that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is illegal and must end “as soon as possible.”

The UN court said in its non-binding opinion that Israel had abused its status as an occupying power in the West Bank and East Jerusalem by adopting a policy of annexing territory, establishing permanent control and building settlements.

Such actions make “Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories illegal,” the court in The Hague, Netherlands, ruled, citing the American news agency AP.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the International Court of Justice (ICJ) discussion as a “false decision.”

“Jews are not occupiers in their own land,” Netanyahu said in a response released by his office, which also said “no erroneous decision in The Hague (the headquarters of the International Court of Justice) can distort the historical truth.”

“The legality of Israeli settlements cannot be questioned,” he said.
