In response to the message of the PS parliamentary group on the change in the funds allocated to sports organizations, Santa Casa da Misericórdia with the Placard game and tourism with online betting, the government reported this value, which reached 61.7 ME in 2022. an amount well in excess of the 35.7 ME of funding allocated annually by the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ) to all federations.

For every euro invested in Placard, sports subjects receive 3.5% legal fees, i.e. 0.035 euros, and 37.5% special tax on “online” gambling is charged on Internet bets, which, according to current legislation, is 15 %. up to five IU and 8% up to 30 IU.
Unsurprisingly, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is the organization that makes the most profit from sports betting: a total of 146 ME in the last five years, representing almost 60% of the total, with an increase in income from “online” in 2021 ( 25.4 ME) and 2022 (23.7 ME) compared to Placard (11 and 10.9 respectively).
Since 2017, the FPF has never received less than 20 IU from sports betting – 1.3 in 2015, 14.3 in 2016 and 20.7 in 2017, which is 22.6 in 2018, 27 in 2019 and 25.3 in 2020.
In an interview with Lusa, an official source of the FPF acknowledged that these revenues amount to between 25% and 30% of the federal budget for each season, adding that these amounts are invested in the promotion of football, in the activities of selections, in the organization of amateur football competitions, futsal and beach soccer, as well as support for participants.
It is followed by the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional (LPFP), which attracted a total of 50.1 ME between 2018 and 2022, with the last two years also considered the most profitable, with 12.6 ME each, more than double total income. federations of tennis (21.1 million people) and basketball (18 million people) over the same period.
Other collective sports cost more modest amounts, such as volleyball (1.6 ME), handball (1.7 ME) and rugby (290 thousand euros), while the beneficiary of roller hockey is the skating federation (184 thousand euros). ). excluding what the winter sports federation guarantees, a total of 4.3 million euros over five years, mainly due to betting on ice hockey.
Billiards at €178,000, badminton at €105,000 are the other federations benefiting from betting between 2018 and 2022, outperforming more traditional sports such as cycling at €6,862, swimming at €4,702 and athletics at €112 .
Approximately 60 thousand euros intended for American football are eventually returned to the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IDPJ).
