Nuno Borges, the country’s number one and the 51st-ranked player in the ATP, played his first career main event final against Rafael Nadal, the winner of 22 Grand Slam titles and the greatest champion of all time on clay. The Spaniard has not played in a final since June 2022, when he won his 14th title at Roland Garros.
In addition to his unprecedented triumph on an ATP tournament, Mayato became only the third Portuguese tennis player to achieve this, after João Sousa (Kuala Lumpur, in 2013, Valencia, in 2015 and Estoril Open, in 2018) and Pedro Sousa (Buenos Aires, 2020).
